New FEPORT brochure: European terminals’ investment in training
Brussels, June 4th, 2018
FEPORT members held their mid-year General Assembly meeting in Lisbon on June 1st, 2018 and had the opportunity to review the main priorities of the organization.
Among others, members reiterated their strong commitment to the European Social Dialogue for Ports and welcomed the publication of FEPORT’s new brochure about training in terminals.
“FEPORT members invest in equipment, in intermodal and green solutions, and, through the payment of concessions fees, to the improvement and modernization of the infrastructure in European ports” said FEPORT President, Mr. Gunther Bonz. “But what is often forgotten is that one of the most important investments they make is for port workers. Every year, many port workers are trained, retrained and allowed to acquire new skills to embrace new job opportunities” added FEPORT President.
“Investing in the training of more than 220,000 port workers means that we believe in the future of our industry and its evolution” concluded Mr. Gunther Bonz.
“Our sector is facing the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution. It is impossible to deploy a meaningful digitalization, a successful automation or to establish seamless communication within the logistics chain without skilled and well-trained employees” commented Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid, FEPORT Secretary General.
“This is what we wanted to show in our brochure. The level of training that is provided to European port workers is among the best in the world. It is a real asset that should be recognized and promoted”, continued FEPORT Secretary General.
“FEPORT members are committed to continuing to invest in training and underline the importance for national and European policy makers to recognize that major transformations are taking place in Society and that they concern all sectors, including the port sector. New job profiles are developing and different jobs will emerge in the terminals of the future. It is urgent to allocate significant resources to train the new generations” added FEPORT Secretary General.
“We believe that the level of general awareness among public policy makers about the major changes that are taking place is still very low while industry is already moving fast. We all collectively should act. Both private and public funding for training is needed” concluded Lamia Kerdjoudj-Belkaid.
